World Class Labs at IITs for Global Engineering Experts

In an informal chat with the media during his visit to IIT Roorkee last month, Ajit Singhvi made the following observations:

"It is imperative that we increase the number of World Class Expert Engineers from IITs to meet our future needs in this competitive world, we need to consider:
·      Each IIT be assigned the additional task of producing World Class Engineering Experts focussing  on one or two 'areas of specialization' such as one IIT focusses on Space and other on Communications and so on.

·      Such chosen IIT should work very closely with the concerned
Ministry in the Central/State
Govt to provide world class
expert engineers.

Without such focussed approach we will go on producing general engineers whereas tomorrow’s world needs more of specialised global experts.

A few research scholars cannot transform the scene, you need the whole team.

Also, we need to reduce Indian students' reliance on Foreign Universities and Labs.

·      Govt should lead setting up of World Class well Equipped Laboratories for both fundamental and applied research in  collaboration with users from Industry and Academia alike.

Nothing significant can be achieved without appropriate equipment and facilities for testing and research. Mere people cannot create improvements.

We should learn from Japanese example of 60s when MITI worked with Industry to focus in one year on Diesel Engine Technology and other on Textile Machinery by first setting up World Class Laboratories. "

Dr Singhvi was at IIT Roorkee recently for a lecture on Post IIT Competencies

He had earlier made an endowment  to IIT Roorkee for a Professor Chair. He made a similar endowment  to IIT Madras.
